Mountain CoLab Presidents Message 2017

2017: We have officially felt the buzz turn up in Revelstoke. And it’s not about legalization of marijuana although that was once a large illegal economic driver in the region. The same vibe is happening throughout the Columbia Basin, in the Kootenays and all our cool mountain communities like Nelson and Rossland. It’s about a sense of opportunity that you may have moved here for, the natural splendor, our way of life, and little spaces like Mountain CoLab, a starter home to the new economy, fostering innovative business organically.

Here are some numbers;

  • Almost 40ish full time members and 100 Co-op members that have walked through the door in 2.5 years of service

  • In our annual survey, we have a 99% satisfaction rate ✨

  • 78% stating that you are getting more work done more than ever

  • 50% saying you are meeting best friends forever BUT

  • 40% really wanting more social & business collisions

  • AND 80% of us are working SUPER hard for the money and 30% need more leisure time ⛷🚴

  • The majority say we need to do more work on reducing noise, increasing privacy and help people keep focus

  • BUT 92% are here for the longer term

So you are dedicated members who appreciate this space but we have room for improvement! Now finally people are taking notice. We have a member inquiry almost every day.

Most of the local, regional, national and global Business Development Organizations (BDO’s) want to work with us. This ecosystem that we are working with includes; Startup Revelstoke: Part of our national entrepreneurship organization which is working to get much needed financial support locally this year to create programming for entrepreneurs and help all our BDOs

  • Economic Development

  • Community Futures

  • Chamber of Commerce

  • RCU

  • Stoke Youth Network

  • WorkBC

  • SmallBusinessBC

  • The Global Entrepreneur Network

  • Many large and small companies in our city

  • And Mountain CoLab and its associations which include

  • Mountain Coworking Alliance and BC Coworking Association

Today, plans for the evolution and expansion of Mountain CoLab are advancing and creating a powerful statement about our commitment to collaboration—between engineers, biologists, builders, designers, web and media, business leaders and our broader community. What we are creating at the CoLab is an ecosystem that allows ideas to take hold and supports creativity, innovation and sustained business growth in every way possible.

Our Vision: We want to help build a sustainable mountain community where your business for social good succeeds with support from our technologists, non-profits, freelancers and entrepreneurs.

That is the simple goal of the CoLab. We believe a diverse mix of people and ideas, business and academia, will thrive here. That this also helps to improve the vibrancy of the city’s downtown area makes the CoLab that much more compelling.

We’ve only seen the start of the experience we expect to hurtle through in the next decade. Mountain CoLab will do everything it can to promote new ideals of rural life - including science, arts, technology and lifestyle.

We invite you to join us in this grand mission. We need your continued help in every way to support innovative entrepreneurs, bring economic diversity to the community and build a strong, sustainable, stoke.

Thank You! 🦄
